What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a condition where a person experiences difficulty in falling or staying asleep. A person suffering from insomnia is constantly at unease while trying to fall asleep and have disturbed sleeping patterns. it can be identified if you are suffering from insomnia based on the symptoms. Common symptoms are feeling drowsy, fatigue, mood disturbance, grumpiness, poor concentration, and declining work or school performances. Millions of people are affected by this illness. It usually leads to weaker memory and difficulty in recalling things.

Approved Sleep Medications

The cause of insomnia differs from person to person. Seeking proper and professional help is very important and while treating insomnia the professional should dig to the root cause of insomnia and then treat the client rather than giving medications based on the symptoms. Behavioral therapy can be beneficial, the person can develop a proper sleep cycle and get sleep for enough hours necessary for the person to function effectively. Many people fail to go back to sleep even after following a proper routine. In such situations sleeping pills are recommended, but recommending sleeping pills to patients with other medical conditions can be dangerous, so analyzing and prescription of the proper medication is necessary. Zolpidem was a medication after taking which a person could easily fall asleep but people were unable to maintain the state of sleep throughout so later an extended version of the same was introduced. The new version is Ambien CR it is prescribed to be taken only at night before sleeping, one cannot drive or even walk after the intake of this medicine. It is not suggested to take the medicine when a person is going to perform a task where full alert and attentiveness is required. Restoril (Temazepam) is used to treat short term insomnia. It gives a calming effect but it also has some side effects which should be kept a track off and should not be delayed to detect. Medicines like Benzodiazepines are used to treat sleepwalking and is a medicine that stays in the body for a very long time. The side effects are, sleepiness and feeling drowsy during the day and unable to sleep without the medication Ramelteon, Zaleplon, Suvorexant, and other Anti-depressants are some more alternatives in treating insomnia but they also have the same side effects as feeling sleepy during the day and dizziness. All these medicines have side effects which one should be made aware of before the consumption as side effects of these medicines can last for several hours from the time of intake.

Precautions taken by people suffering from Insomnia.

There are several precautions that people suffering from insomnia should follow. Waking up at the same time and maintaining the same sleeping pattern is necessary. Even if it is a weekend people suffering from insomnia should wake up at the same time to avoid disturbing patterns later. Avoid the consumption of nicotine, caffeine and alcohol. The effects of caffeine last for almost 24hours and even though alcohol has sedative properties it is temporary, the person might wake up in the middle of the night and experience difficulty in going back to sleep. Exercising can play a very beneficial role in treating insomnia but one should make sure they exercise at least 3 to 4 hours before going to bed. One should limit the number of naps taken during the day as it may affect the quality of sleep at night. One should also avoid activities in bed, all the activities like balancing the checkbook, completion of work, etc should be completed before going to bed. People suffering from digestive problems should avoid eating right before going to bed as it activates the digestive system and can make insomnia worse. Drinking a lot of liquid should be avoided too as it overwhelms the bladder and causes disturbed sleep. Try and develop a healthy, peaceful and suitable environment where you can fall and stay asleep easily. The temperature, sound and external disturbing stimulus can be controlled. If undergoing any medication one should avoid driving and doing similar activities as it is very dangerous and it may cost ones life. Thinking about work-related activities and stressing, overthinking about the next day’s activities should be avoided. To help with the same one can try and make a to-do list for the next day so that you have a clear idea of the tasks to be completed the next day. Reducing stress is very important if one is trying to overcome insomnia, work and develop better problem-solving skills which help in maintaining healthy work and life relationships which directly affect the quality of environment around you.
